If you posses these qualities and are looking for a career that will maximize your potential, the Ironworkers Apprenticeship and Training Program will provide a way to achieve the success you’re looking for. 

Ironworkers Local 387 Apprenticeship is a four year program. During your apprenticeship you will receive 8000 hours of on the job training while attending class one full week a quarter, receiving 204 hours of classroom and shop training per year of apprenticeship. Your training includes OSHA 30 hour safety training, OSHA Sub-Part R, Blueprint reading, care and safe use of hand tools, mathematics, structural steel erection, proper rigging techniques, oxy-acetylene flame cutting and welding with SMAW and FCAW to name a few.

Since there is no cost for this training, you may elect to receive your GI Bill benefits directly!

 Aspects of the Trade 

Structural– If you have paid attention to the men walking on the steel framework of a building under construction you have seen the Structural Ironworker. Their job is to unload, erect and connect fabricated iron members to form the skeleton of a structure. This skeleton makes up the support that the rest of the building hangs from. 

Reinforcing and Post Tensioning– The Reinforcing Ironworkers fabricate and place steel bars (re-bar) in concrete forms to reinforce concrete structures. Re-bar is placed on suitable supports and is then tied together with tie wire, then encased in concrete. 

Ornamental– The Architectural and Ornamental Ironworker works to create the outside or façade of a building. They install metal window frames, erect the curtain wall or window wall system . They also install and erect metal stairways, Pre-cast concrete panels, cat walks, gratings, ladders, doors, railings, gates and much more. 

Rigging and Machinery Moving– The Rigger loads, unloads, moves and sets machinery, structural steel, curtains wall, pre-cast concrete panels etc. This work is done using equipment such as power hoists, cranes fork lifts etc. 

Welding and Burning– welding and burning is performed in all aspects of the trade you will receive training and Certify through American Welding Society in SMAW (Stick) and FCAW (wire) welding processes. As an Accredited AWS Testing Facility these certs will be good anywhere in the country!
